Mark of Fealty

During the belated Winter Holiday global (which was very rewarding, by the way. I made out like a bandit by trapping more than 160 reindeer, resulting in a bunch of practice points and quest points that I desperately needed) I started compiling a hoard of lime vials (blink potions) from the verminous rats in Rune Forest.

Once the global was over, I was free to take my potions and visit Sir Edmund, who is tucked away inside the Knight's Barracks area of the castle located in the courtyard next to the Moonmist Tavern. He is standing next to a locked door that is the castle treasure room.

**The famous knight Sir Edmund stands here.
'Oh, Lantis!' the knight, Sir Edmund exclaims to you. 'I appear to have locked the key to the royal vault inside the vault itself.'
The knight, Sir Edmund blushes. Awwww... isn't that just TOO CUTE!
The knight, Sir Edmund says to you, 'I would be eternally grateful if you could get in there somehow and get it back for me, before someone finds out.'

And so, because Sir Edmund is so cute when he's acting all embarrassed, you help the poor guy out. The blink potions allow you to blink around Rune Castle if you don't have the blink spell practiced. You may need to use a lot of potions before you blink into the treasury.

Inside the vault there is a heaping mound of gold and a key. You may be tempted to take the gold, but resist that impulse. Taking the gold will cause the vault to turn into a death trap. In fact, if you have a trigger that picks up gold for you, I would recommend turning that off as well, temporarily. The act of fealty that grants you this mark is taking the key and returning it to Sir Edmund without cleaning out the Rune castle vault. Take the key only and let yourself out, or blink out. Then relocate Sir Edmund in his room next to the vault, and give him the key.

You give a convoluted key to the knight, Sir Edmund.
'Thank you!' the knight, Sir Edmund exclaims to you. 'I was so worried.'
For exhibiting integrity and fealty, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted the Mark of Fealty!
You gain 500000 experience points!
You gain 68 practices!

There is also a version of the fealty mark for those adventurers who chose to get the mark of Cruelty.

Mark of Fear

What can one say about the mark of fear? The task is clear. Kill Lord Pumpkin.

A burning candle sits in the middle of the pumpkin that is his face, flickering madly. Lord Pumpkin grins evilly at you, and lightning arcs up his left sleeve. This is the most hideous and dangerous creature ever summoned by Alpheus Winterborn. Apparently, it is a powerful demon that possesses this old suit and jack-o-lantern. You wonder how you can destroy this creature if Alpheus himself could not banish it.
He is a demon approximately 7'11" tall.

Lord Pumpkin is spawns the third floor of Winterborne mansion in Rune. He repops in CPK, but wanders out into the NPK and non-PK rooms in the area. The third floor is mostly NPK but with a few CPK rooms, so you should be careful where you walk into.

I convinced my clannie, Fafner, to use his archon level skills to help me slay Lord Pumpkin... it didn't work out quite like I thought it would. We each died about four times trying. I died because Lord Pumpkin could squash me like a bug. It was only when we started working together and coordinating our efforts (Fafner tanking, and me alternately druid healing him and bashing Lord Pumpkin,) that we started to make progress.

Things got crazy in the middle though. We ran after Lord Pumpkin who had fled into CPK and Fafner had to pull my equipment off my corpse. Fortunately I came on the run not wearing my good equipment, only things I could stand to lose. Then Xirote showed up to help us, and he was a big help since he kept Lord Pumpkin spelled up and kept at him while Fafner was trying to hold off the archon hunter that showed up for him long enough to help me get the mark. Here's how it ended:

Lord Pumpkin has been slain!
For resisting fear in the face of extreme adversity, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted the Mark of Fear!
You gain 240000 experience points!
You gain 50 practices!

In case you were curious, to get the mark you have to land the killing blow on Lord Pumpkin between level 100 and 200. As far as I know, those are the only requirements.

In hindsight, had I known I could only get either courage OR fear, I might have decided to get courage, but I don't know.

Mark of Ferocity

This mark is earned by first class players for completing the initiation quest in Rune Forest to join the Order of the Rabid Wolf. The companion mark, Fury, is allegedly similar, except you would be joining the Order of the Malachite Golem instead. I chose the Order of the Rabid Wolf because it was related to saving the forest, which I found admirable. The quest to complete is called: Diverging Paths - The Order of the Rabid Wolf.

You inform Elauyin you have completed your quest 'Diverging Paths - The Order of the Rabid Wolf'.
Elauyin tells you, 'Congratulations on the completion of thy quest, Fishous!'
Elauyin tells you, 'As a reward for thy valor, I am awarding you 1 quest points.'

You have gained the Mark of Ferocity!
Elauyin hands you a tome of experience.
Your standing with The Order of the Rabid Wolf has increased by 10,000.
You are now Appreciated amongst The Order of the Rabid Wolf.
Your standing with The Order of the Malachite Golem has decreased by 10,000.
You are now Apprehensive amongst The Order of the Malachite Golem.
Elauyin says 'A newcomer! We've had a few today, and you look like...'
Elauyin peers at you.
Elauyin says 'Hmm. You seem more awake than the others I've seen today. Let's see what you can do...'

Following this, you are immediately given the achievement quest that leads to Mark of Resolution.

Mark of Fighting

This mark is given for completing the fighter class achievement quest. I completed the quest Valkyrie Training !!!, the valkyrie archon level quest for this mark, given by Lord Telleri. The quest was not difficult. I think many of the phases of the archon level quest are the same as the lower level quests for this mark. The capstone of the quest is Proven Archon quest, making it a higher difficult level to complete.

I must have forgotten to save the text of this mark, because I can't find it anywhere.

Mark of Flames

This mark is for level 180 and above. This mark is mutually exclusive with mark of Extinguishment. For both marks, you obtain an enchanted ball of magma from Wiggles Tenderfoot it Vesuvius. If you want mark of Flames, you take the enchanted call of magma and have it in your inventory when you get to Vyst.

To get to Vyst, you need keys from Zizziks, Syrazic, Pythax, Stepha, and Wyglif the Wise. These mobs are all soloable by an archon. If I can do it, that must be true.
I am not going to write out all the steps and directions for getting through these mobs at this time. There is a perfectly good guide to Vyst run on Clan Knights of Chaos, and Alliance Order of Chaos website.

I would not recommend going into Vyst's room unless you are either planning to successfully kill the boss with a group of 2 or 3 other archons, or have nothing on you to lose. I did the later.
I went in with the understanding that it was suicide, and I prepared for that.

[Boss] **The Demigod Vyst is here, radiating a fiery aura.
'Ahhh, a treat.' Vyst says. 'Thank you, Lantis.'
Vyst begins attacking you!
Vyst takes an enchanted ball of magma from you, and pops it in his mouth.
For exhibiting true altruism towards the powers of Gath, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have gained the Mark of Flames!
You gain 58 practices!

Mark of Flammability

Before you beat your brains in visiting every practitioner of the power of Gath in the game, read this.

According to a player commenting on another website, this mark can only be received by a player in a player killing clan. I am here to tell you that is not true. As of the time I earned this mark, that was not a requirement. I am not in a PK clan, nor have I ever been in one. It is highly unlikely that I will ever be in one either.

All that is required for this mark is to visit the master pyromancer in the shrine of Gath in Sigil Underground. If you are a follower of Gath, you should be able to visit him at any time. If you are not a follower of Gath, you will probably need to wait until the religious battle in order to gain entry to him. Non-followers are rebuffed from the inner rooms of the shrines at other times.

For learning the secrets of a dangerous sect of magic, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted The Mark of Flammability!
You gain 25 archon points!
You gain 29 practices!

Mark of Force

This mark comes from sacrificing a straw man, scatter item. The mark is either at a very low random, or the conditions are difficult to meet, or obscure that they are not known with certainty. I had heard at one point that this mark was given when you sacrifice the last straw man scatter in the game. However, I don't see how that could be the case since at any time there are numerous end game areas that are not being searched for scatters. Consider this one based on pure luck.

Mark of Forgery

I remember when this mark was made known (which I think was at the same time that marks were disambiguated and the mark list was published) and I was speaking with Balimos about what we thought we had to do to get the mark. We both thought that signing the sidhe dignitaries petitions was the obvious idea. So, Balimos went and signed about 800 petitions, without getting the mark. Then I went and started killing all the petitioners, and that didn't work either.

None of that is really germane though because all we found out was how NOT to complete the mark of forgery. This mark is available to all levels, and requires you to locate every sidhe dignitary in Templeton and say yes to them when asked to sign their petition allowing sidhes to be on the city council.

Track was helpful in locating some of them, but track did not always work. I recommend that after you have tracked all of the sidhe dignitaries that you are able to, subdivide the town into quarters and walk through the sections until you find all of them. Tracking accounted for 15 sidhe dignitaries, but of those there were about 3 that I had to find without track.

You say to a Sidhe dignitary, 'Yes'
'Thanks my lady, with your help the Sidhes of Templeton will have their voices heard.' a Sidhe dignitary says.
For attempting to forge multiple fraudulent signatures and being caught in the act, albeit for a noble cause, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted Forgery!
You gain 1,000,000 experience points!

The Powers have noticed thy efforts at betterment, and have rewarded thee!
You gain 5 hit points, 11 spell points, 5 stamina, and 13 practices!
You have become more learned at 'acrobatics' (79%).
[CLAN] Etienne has gained class level 52, total level 112!
You gain 1,000,000 experience points!
You gain 397,600 experience points!
You gain 50 practices!

Mark of Forgiveness/Mark of Minimalism Primer

What started out as an innocent nudge to some first classers to try a first class run beyond Odious ended up with me feeling guilty for accidentally getting a bunch of novices CPK'd... whoops. It wasn't totally my fault though! Just listen to the whole story before you brand me a novice murderer.

I was asked by the group that was doing the Odious run about Hydra's den and the first class Winterborn run. I know a thing or two about Hydra's Den, but I had limited knowledge about the Winterborn runs. I told them this so there would be no mistaking that I didn't know what I was doing at all.

We headed to Winterborn Mansion, and went up to the third floor. I died twice just on the third floor. The first time was when the form leader led us right into Lord Pumpkin, and then again when Lord Pumpkin chased me. Both of those deaths were NPK.

We finally reached the South Tapestry Gallery, where Alpheus Winterborn likes to hang out. We entered the Decrepit Dumbwaiter and used the 'push up' command to ascend to the Top of the Spire.

Radesi pushes the UP button repeatedly, and you can hear the pulleys in the shaft starting to turn.
The bell on the wall DONGS as the doors close and it starts to ascend.

The floor bell DONGS as the dumbwaiter doors open into the spire.

Then, we got out of the dumbwaiter and were standing in front of a demon composed of eyeballs, the mob that we needed to kill to get the mark of Forgiveness. Orion died first while he was trying to backstab the mob down to 45%. He got to 75%. Radesi died next when he somehow inadvertently attacked death, who had arrived when Orion died. I actually saved Radesi and Porbag once by tanking until they had fled while we were trying to kill the mob.

Unfortunately, Porbag got impatient waiting for Orion and Radesi to get back, or maybe he just wanted to help Orion get back up to the mob faster, but he pressed the down button on the dumbwaiter and we started descending.

Porbag pushes the DOWN button repeatedly, and you can hear the pulleys in the shaft starting to turn.
The bell on the wall DONGS as the doors close and it starts to descend.

There is a hideous screeching sound as the the dumbwaiter's pulley system jams, and you grind to a halt.
The emergency grate in the ceiling pops open automatically.

There is a jarring grating sound all around you as the dumbwaiter grinds to a halt.

So, at this point Orion and Radesi both have corpses upstairs and we couldn't loot them due to weight issues, Porbag broke the dumbwaiter thereby trapping both of us in CPK and trapping Orion and Radesi from their equipment. Since we were stuck, we decided to explore to see if we could get ourselves out. The area was no-recall, so that was out...

Note: At this point, there are really only two things you can do. The first is to go exploring like we did, and fine the way to the iron rooster, for the mark of Minimalism.

The second thing you can do would be to have another low level with detect illusion waiting on the second floor to go into a room in the CPK at the end of the hall at the bottom of the west tower to unjam the elevator, but we didn't know this at the time.

I was delighted to see that we were in the Ventilation Ducts, which apparently lead to the roof. I had been wondering how to gain access to the second class run for the Mark of Minimalism. I left the stuck dumbwaiter car and traveled the path to the end of the Ventilation Duct. Looking up, I could see the rooftop of Winterborn Mansion. Also, there was a ventilator blocking the way up. So, I tried entering the ventilator, which worked.

On The Roof Of Winterborn Mansion
(-------------------------------------------------)
WARNING: You are in a CHAOTIC PLAYER KILLING room.

On second thought, this might have been a bad idea. The wind whips about you ferociously, the inevitable consequence of being on an unshielded rooftop a hundred and fifty feet off the ground. The rooftop is slippery from the recent rain, and the shingles practically beg to drag you off your perch and down the rooftop and leave your corpse in the hedge maze surrounding the house far below.
*An animate weathervane prances about on the roof, looking to assert his dominance.

Instead of attacking a massive iron rooster, which would result in almost certain death, we tried to exit from the roof, but no luck, the roof was also no-recall and even though there are exits in 9 directions, they don't allow you to actually leave the room. If you try to exit you get a message about nearly, but not quite falling to your death off the roof.

Bowing to the inevitable, I picked a spot (under the ventilator, inside the ducts) and prayed for death. Miraculously, I didn't seem to lose anything... I'm not sure if that was just a good spot, or if I am mistaken, or if I was wearing a CPK-protection pendant, but whatever it was worked really well.

Sadly though I now have survivor's guilt for the other three people losing bags of their stuff and not able to loot their corpses, while I lost nothing, and they went up there because I suggested it.

Mark of Fortitude

I was feeling pretty bored with normal Materia Magica activities, questing and leveling, and I unfortunately didn't feel like following up on any mini quests, so I decided to take a poke through my mark list to see what I could do now. A lot of marks require killing mobs that are much higher levels than I can solo, or require going to places that are hazardous to my health.

So, I settled on trying for the mark of fortitude, one of the few marks I can get by myself at my level that I don't already have. And when I say 'do it myself' I really mean that because I'll tell you that although I knew what was required for the mark, my sources were incomplete and not as helpful as they could have been. Several people I talked to for advice told me they didn't know how to answer my questions because they had gotten help. I ended up dying a bunch of times in Ogre Village before I got it, and I finally did get my most important question answered by Skyblue. Here I impel you to read the whole entry before you set out for OV or buy anything.

Here's how I did it. First, I bought a some placke and hitea seeds from the plant shop in New Rigel. I brought them to Pelunia in the Ogre Village. She is near the entrance, but also near a no-flee wisteria vine, so watch out. I gave her one of each kind of seed, and she gave me a mystical pine cone for each as a reward.

Then I took the pine cones with me to the Quiet Glade area of Ogre Village... unfortunately I couldn't get to the Quiet Glade the conventional way because there were two no-flee wisteria vines blocking the path and I didn't think I'd be able to take on two at once, so I looked up Knight's of Chaos's Ogre Village map which was very helpful throughout this mark. In fact, I'm thinking of turning it into a graphic map in case theirs stops working for me again. Anyway, on the map there is an illusionary bridge between the Quiet Glade and the Ogre Village, so I had to cross the slippery bridge, carefully avoiding the no-flee tentacle beast and find the bridge.

So, I crossed the bridge, and planted the pine cones. The trees grew in the Quiet Glade and I pushed on them to try to make branches fall from them. For some reason though I couldn't make it happen, even with enhanced strength boosting me to 19/19 strength. I got frustrated and repeated it twice more with new pine cones and it didn't work. That's when I started asking for help. Xirote tried to help me, but I didn't understand him and he ended up laughing at me... but Skyblue was willing to help me by telling me that I didn't even need the branches from the pine trees, because willow branches such as you can find in the wilds right outside Ogre Village will work. And that's when I was banging my head against the wall. Why don't the websites with mark pages just say that?!

Step 1: Waste money getting seeds from plant shop and bring them to Pelunia.
Step 2: Take pine cones and plant them in Quiet Glade.
Step 3: Get killed twice falling into the death trap that the illusionary bridge to the Ogre Village can become if you don't cross it with levitation.
Step 4: Push on trees with scrolls you bought for enhanced strength.

I could have avoided all of that, but then I wouldn't have learned the hard way and come back to report to you how to get it done with less effort. So, I got the willow branches and took them to Disone and Datone, a two-headed ogre who is standing in the room with the fire which is south of the NPK river. If you are visible, they will talk to you about bringing them branches for the tree god, I think it was. Put the branches in the fire and then reach in and take the dragon tooth necklace that is in the fire. The point of doing all that is to have the necklace, which is no-save, and will let you talk to the ogres in the village.

You will need to be able to speak to the ogres if you want to challenge Throwfar and get the mark. Wearing the necklace, sayto throwfar challenge, and then go meet him in the rabbit throwing place in the middle area of the village. When you get there, give him 10000 gold (I recommend bringing enough gold to play several games with him) and he will give you a rabbit for the game of rabbit toss. That's right, you have to beat him at hurling rabbits. Don't worry too much though, as the game is random and doesn't seem to be based on actual strength or even luck.

The odds are slanted in your favor, though it may not seem like it. Throwfar always gives the advantage to the challenger. If you miss on your first throw, you still win because he gives you the point... and if you tie, you get that point too because he is so confident he will win. After the first four games I played with him I was beginning to think it was rigged, or that perhaps the rabbits were sensing that I was soft on bunnies and didn't really enjoy throwing them over trees, and sometimes into trees. I eventually won on the sixth game. You can challenge him about every 15 real minutes. If you challenge him and he says he is tired, don't challenge him again for a short while because he will punish you in some way.

I went through a lot, and thus in the end I really showed I had the fortitude to deserve getting this mark.

'Argggg Nooo...' Throwfar says. 'Throwfar no believe it. Throwfar lose three times in row!'
You have received the mark of Fortitude.
You have been granted the Mark of Fortitude!
You gain 50 practices!

Mark of Fraud

This evening while I was on an orc pursuer quest, I ran into the candy salesman. Since I've been very fortunate lately, I decided I could afford to lay out 1 million in gold for a mark.

'Allo there, Lantis!' a candy salesman exclaims. 'Care for some candy? Three thousand for candy corn, four for a candy cane, and five for rock candy!'
A candy salesman asks you, 'And for a discerning eye like yours, I might be willing to sell a little secret something-something for a mil gold, you know?'
A candy salesman winks suggestively at you. Perhaps he has big plans for later?

Although this is sounding a little like a come on, I decided to go ahead and give him the money as planned.

You give a candy salesman 1000000 gold.
For gullibly trusting strange men with candy, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted the Mark of Fraud!
You gain 50 archon points!
You gain 37 practices!
'Whoops, like I have nothing, actually!' a candy salesman exclaims to you. 'Or, I suppose, I have lots of gold, and you have nothing! Toodle-oo!'
A candy salesman bounds off happily, skipping in his creepy walk.

So, there you go. You need to be an archon to trigger him though, and allegedly you can't receive the mark unless he triggers first, which happens randomly as you enter his room.

Mark of Fright

When I was still in second class, I started collecting the items I would need to complete this mark, but wasn't able to finish it until sometime later.

In a southwestern nook in the Basilica of Diocletian, there is a venerable veteran guarding a downward exit. If you try to pass him, he stops you and threatens your life and the lives of all those around you. However, he will let you get in to see his protectee if you are willing to do some work for her. The work he requires, when you ask about it, is to fetch several objects from other continents of Alyria.

You will need to bring him a bronze antique telescope, a level 120 object from the Xaventry antique shop, or the Tellerium antique shop. You will also need a book of astronomy, which you can get from the library in Tower of Art, or it can be found in the hidden upstairs room in Rune Museum. Finally, you will need a set of star charts. This is a tricky item to get because it is a rare repop item from Stargazer Clan Hall on Avros. It is buried in the star chart room, and it should be there after a reboot, and possibly after a crash as well. However, it is difficult to get because there will be other people quickly digging for it as well. Due to the item's rarity, it is valued at around 1 million gold which makes it worth camping for many players with alts.

I was lucky enough to get one, but was not quick enough to snatch it up. However, the person who did pick it up was charitable enough to give it back to me, and I appreciate that.

Then, you must take the items back to the venerable veteran and give him the objects. I was reluctant to do this part because I didn't really trust my information. Every source of information I had said that this mark was not level restricted, yet the only people I have seen with it have been forth class or higher. If I was wrong and the mark was restricted to forth class and up, then I would be out a set of star charts worth a million gold.

Since I wanted the mark though, and I convinced myself that a million gold was not that much, I plunged recklessly into a risky situation and gave him the objects. I decided to give them to him in the order he mentioned them, and he responded favorably. I got the mark when I handed him the star charts, and gained access to the area below him.

For not making a venerable veteran kill you and everyone you know, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted the Mark of Fright!

Mark of Frivolity

As far as I know, this mark is technically obtainable by any level, but its not possible without a lot of stamina. The goal of this mark is to use a jump rope 90 times in a row, without tripping at any point. It is not easy at all.

First, you can get a jump rope from a little girl in New Kolvir. If you have misgivings about going into CPK just for a toy, then you can probably buy one from the bazaar from someone who has bigger balls than you.

Once you have your jump rope, you need a strategy for keeping your stamina from dropping into the red zone. I can't say that its a fact, but it seemed to me when I was testing, that having low stamina made you trip more often. Each time you jump rope it costs 100 stamina. There is no way for any one to have enough stamina to get through all of the jumping without refresh, even if your stamina was maxxed out.

There are things you can do to make this easier though to succeed:

  1. Find a dedicated friend who will cast refresh on you. I used Krypt, but you'll have to find your own person.

  2. If you have no friends you could mix a lot of refresh mixes and eat them while you jump. Be aware though, you must not wait more than a second or two between jumps or the counter resets.

  3. Jumping without holding all the extra weight of your equipment could help.

  4. Jumping in a high-regen room or a room with a refresh fountain couldn't hurt, or both. That way your friend will not run out of spell points while repeatedly casting refresh, and you can drink to refresh yourself periodically.

It took me numerous tries to get this. I ate a lot of refresh mixes, which was not the best solution because if you get full halfway through jumping then you're screwed. You can't eat anymore mixes when you're full. It takes a while to get full, but if you try and fail a few times before you get on a jumping streak, you might end up getting full at the wrong moment.

Finally, I got to 90 jumps in a row though. Once before that, I got to 89 and tripped, I was mad.

You jump over a jump rope.
You say, '90'
For dedicating time to the practice of agility the powers have granted thee a mark!
You have been granted the Mark of Frivolity!
