Mark of Gain/Loss

My first post of the new year, and its about a new mark, which is always a happy occasion. The Mark of Loss or Mark of Gain became public knowledge recently, so the information that is available about it has not been put through the paces, in my opinion. Here is what is allegedly true about that mark though:

It is obtainable third class and up starting at level 145. It works by wearing an antique iron coin, and using it to place a bet on either heads or tails (ex. use coin heads.) Then use the coin to throw it.

You toss an antique iron coin... it comes up tails!
You lose the coin toss.
For lossing to accurately predict the resting face of an antique iron coin, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted the Mark of Loss!
You gain 50000 experience points!
You gain 50 practices!
You gain 50 quest points!

Likewise, if you win the coin toss you receive the Mark of Gain, which I believe has the same rewards. And of course the two marks are mutually exclusive, like other pairs of marks. So, there you go. It was lucky I saved that coin. It was a gift a while ago, but I never used it. In fact, I've often thought about getting rid of it, but I never do. Additionally, an antique coin is dropped from the spirit of Lord Templeton in Templeton castle.

Mark of Gambling

I made a new friend recently who helped me get this mark. Aragon was nice enough to give me a little boon when he donated some large amount of money to the game and got close to 300 RU for it. So, I took the 12 RU I got as a present and spent half of it on a game of Fnargh.

I haven't played Yahtzee in a long long time, but I've been told that Fnargh is like Yahtzee. The rules seem kind of confusing initially, but once you get a hang of it, this mark is easy.

To receive this mark, you just have to score high enough to get in the top 10 on the monthly high scores list. You don't even have to be on the all time high scores list. So even if you're terrible at Fnargh, you could just play at the beginning of the month before the list fills up, but it really is easy to win.

For possessing the ability and luck to win, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted The Mark of Gambling!
For placing 10th or better in the monthly high scores, Uath blesses you with a reward.
You gain 45 practices!

Basically, you roll the dice and can reroll any or all of the dice up to two more times. The goal is to have the set of dice be a good fit into one of the categories that the game is scoring you on. A perfect game would require getting obscenely lucky and rolling something like 11 sets of five of a kind, plus 1 large straight (5 dice in sequential order), and 1 small straight (4 dice in sequential order). It is very unlikely though, so don't worry to much about reaching that pinnacle.

You don't need to have a great game to get the mark, but if you can place 10th or better on the yearly high scores, you receive a bonus of more practices. I thought that I would also get a bonus for making it into the top 10 all time high scores, but I didn't.

For placing 10th or better in the yearly high scores, Uath blesses you with a reward.
You gain 30 practices!

Mark of Gloom

I logged on to Lantis this morning and realized that since I was practically naked, and it was almost midnight Alyrian time, I might as well try for the mark of gloom. So, I bought a gold potion for plane travel in New Rigel, then I put my odds and ends in a safe place so I could go naked.

With nothing but 2,000 gold, my spear of cavhfail, and ten strong oak boxes with reagents, I set out to Rune. I climbed the clock tower, cast steam invocation on myself (druid pass door) and went in. I waited outside the portal for a few minutes, and when the coast was clear I went inside. Although I didn't have anything to lose, I also didn't want to die, so I was edgy. I had my gold potion ready to drink. I thought I was going to have to sit with Mordred in the Void for 30 real minutes, but I got the mark after only ten minutes.

For keeping the company of the damned, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted the Mark of Gloom!

Mark of Greed

This mark is obtained by socking away 1 million gold into 1 bank account in Alyria during first class, and then going to that bank and typing bank deposit all.

Mark of Graduation

This is the very first mark you will probably receive if you are a new player. Lasler and now Lasler Valley is a totally different experience than it was 10 years ago. Some things are the same. The dragon is still killing novices and Snaip is still there. Also the troll and the caverns are still there.

For this mark, the new adventurer needs to leave the school house where new players come into existence. Maybe you could type recall and just bypass about three novice marks to get to the village faster, but you'd only be cheating yourself. There are too many rooms in the new school house, but aside from that, I am very impressed with the new additions to Lasler and the way that achievements have been streamlined to guide adventurers through the area.

Terifysa the Schoolhouse Master says 'Congratulations on completing the Path, Gillena. I've been watching your progress, and have been impressed.'
For completing the Path of Knowledge, Terifysa has granted you the Mark of Graduation!
You have been granted the Mark of Graduation!

Mark of Harvest

To receive this mark, you need to complete the quest called Harvest Time that is given by Lord Agrippa during the fall season. That quest calls for you to complete 4 other quests (Wheat Harvest, Pumpkin Harvest, Meat for Winter, and Corn Harvest) and then turn in the quest to Agrippa.

It was a pain to get all the quests I needed from the various quest masters and soon learned the best way to get the quests I needed. I think what I did was to request a regular quest and then request a seasonal quest. As long as I already had a regular quest from the qm I was requesting from, I would get the seasonal quest I needed. I can't remember for certain if that is what worked, but I think so.

Mark of Healing

This mark is given for completing the cleric class achievement quest. I completed the quest Druid Training !!!, the druid archon level quest for this mark, given by Lady Undya. The quest was not difficult. I think many of the phases of the archon level quest are the same as the lower level quests for this mark. The capstone of the quest is Proven Archon quest, making it a higher difficult level to complete.

You inform Lady Undya you have completed your quest 'Druid Training !!!'.
For completing your Druid training, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
Lady Undya tells you, 'Congratulations on the completion of thy quest, Lantis!'
Lady Undya tells you, 'As a reward for thy valor, I am awarding you 50 quest points,
500 building points, 50 piety, 65 practices, and 100,000 gold pieces.'
You have gained the Mark of Healing!
Lady Undya hands you a graduation present.

Mark of Honor

This mark is from Rune. To receive this mark, visit Raksann (you don't have to wear that dress tonight!...ahem, sorry.)
and request guard duty. Raksann will meet you in front of the Rune jail to explain the assignment. You are charged with keeping watch for a few Alyrian hours.
You must not abandon your post during this time, or allow enemies to overcome you. When Raksann returns to relieve you, you will receive the mark, if you have done your job.

A while after Raksann leaves, and boredom starts to set in with your job, you are attacked by two ariels. Kill them both. A while after this, Raksann will return.

Raksann has arrived.
'Thank you Refrain.' Raksann says. 'Take this gold, you have earned it.'
Raksann gives you 2,500 gold coins.
You gain 5,000 experience points!
Raksann gives you a gate pass.
Raksann snaps to attention and salutes you.
For standing your ground, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted the Mark of Honor!
You gain 50,000 experience points!
You gain 43 practices!

Be advised: if you fail in your job, either by leaving the room or letting the ariels live, then you will not get the mark of honor. Instead, you will get the mark of shame.

Mark of Hordes

This mark was granted to me for being 1 of 100 players at Rune recall at the same time. It was difficult to get 100 players to stay all in the same spot. People kept going idle and trying to jump into social, and leaving for other reasons. My favorite is when people say 'call me back when you get more people'... it makes no sense, because then everyone would say that.

For being part of the formation of a horde, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted The Mark of Hordes!
You gain 50 archon points!
You gain 50 archon points!
You gain 50 archon points!
You gain 50 archon points!
You gain 50 archon points!
You gain 42 practices!

Anyway, after we received that mark, we tried to corral everyone to Xaventry for another similar mark, but only 60 or so people showed up, and we needed a lot more. Eventually we gave up until another day.

Mark of Humility and Mark of Sanctuary

It was night time, and I was on a quest for Lord Agrippa when I was contacted by another player who was following up on an arrangement we had made earlier for her to sell me a tyke's diaper. I met her before I finished my quest at New Rigel bank and bought the diaper from her for 1 million gold. Yes, it was steep, but when you consider that you practically get two marks from it, it sounds like a lot less. That's my justification anyway.

So, I pulled the diaper on while I was running down Lewis in New Rigel so I could get back to Lord Agrippa on time. BTW, I can only assume this diaper was obtained from the new location which is on the baby dracon by the Queen of Vir that is on a low repop.

You wear a tyke's diaper about your waist.
For showing remarkable humility, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted the Mark of Humility!
You gain 50000 experience points!
You gain 19 practices!

Then I finished my quest with all due haste, and went to get the second mark that comes with getting the mark of humility.

I went to the the garden of life directly outside of recall in Rune. I order to get the mark of sanctuary, you must first have the mark of humility, and then you must flee into rune recall. So, I attacked a few deer with the intention of fleeing, but it didn't work very well since I kept killing them in one round before I could flee. Then I decided to disarm myself and take off my haste so that I might have a chance of fleeing. I also stopped bothering to try fleeing from deer because they are too weak, but a city guard in the same room held up long enough for me to flee.

You pant and gasp, trying to catch your breath.
For having the humility to seek sanctuary within one of their temples while under duress, the Powers have granted thee a mark.
You have been granted the Mark of Sanctuary!
You gain 55 practices!
You gain 225000 experience points!

Mark of Hygiene

I can only guess on the approximate date that I received this mark on Lantis. I am backdating it now though because I very recently achieved the mark on my alternate character, Refrain. Although I got this mark before I was logging my marks, and even before this site was a twinkle in my eye, I didn't think it was fair to deprive my audience, if you do indeed exist, from hearing about my Odious exploits.

The goal of this mark is to defeat the odious wizard in Dungeon Odious. This dungeon is located essentially near Sigil. Although the dungeon can appear in different locations around Sigil, it is usually south east of Sigil. In the most extreme cases, it may be very south near the mountains. Finding the dungeon is one of the challenges for adventurers who want this mark.

This mark is now obtainable for all levels in scaled difficulty. It gets to be a more difficult run when attempted by higher level adventurers, in other words. Additionally, once you have received the rewards for killing Odious you will not be able to return to the area. As far as I know this is still true. In that way it is similar to the Tower of Aroxa. Unlike the Tower of Aroxa which an adventurer may do on their own, the Dungeon Odious usually requires at least three people cooperating. Another challenge of this mark is forming an adequate combination of adventurers to do the run. This is essentially meant as training for the expectations of higher level runs you may do in the next classes.

A form capable of killing the Odious wizard will need to have one or two people acting as tanks. Tanks are characters who are usually fighter class who have elevated hit points and proficiency in their weapon and defenses. They will need to sustain a few good hits from Odious, or dodge them effectively. Also, you will need a spell caster. It is much harder to find a spell caster first class than it is to find a fighter. Whoever you choose as your spell caster will need to have poison and plague. Healing ability, and protection spells are also encouraged.

Assuming you've managed to cobble together a form, and found the dungeon, you must then locate the Odious wizard. The dungeon has eight possible rooms that the Odious wizard could be in. The challenge is that you must enter a one way portal before you know if he is behind it or not. Unfortunately, you may encounter other creatures that you may not be able to kill. There is a very difficult moon imp, and a wraith. On the easy side, are the monkeys with typewriters, the cockroaches and cake, and the Venus flytrap that doesn't attack. The other two mobs are in the middle. If you're lucky, you will immediately find the right room the wizard is in and bypass some dying.

Once you find the wizard, you will need to cast poison and plague on him to keep him from regenerating health during the battle. When I did this mark initially, the case was that you could poison/plague Odious until he was vomiting and then kill him. However, the Odious wizard was tweaked so that he no longer was harmed so much by plague and poison. They will keep him from out healing your attacks though, so it is still important.

Expect to have your form members die a few times, even if you've got all the oars pulling in the same direction, so to speak, it is still a difficult task. When someone dies, or combat is suspended by fleeing, go immediately back into the room and wake up Odious. He regens fast when he sleeps, so keep him awake, and plagued until you are ready to attack him again.

Hopefully at the end of all this fighting and dying, Odious will be dead. This mark is now given to the entire party, rather than just the person who gets the killing blow. I am not certain though if the odious wizard still withholds the mark if he is blind when he dies. Better not the risk it.

Finally, the group will be transported to a treasure room. Get everything out of the chest. It used to be that the treasure room could spit you out before you knew you needed to empty the chest, but with the tweak there seems to be plenty of time to get your rewards. Eventually, the form will be transported to the Yo-yo instruction room in the Academy in Sigil.

For sparing Sigil from this stinky sorcerer, the Powers have granted thee a Mark.
You have been granted the Mark of Hygiene!
You gain 100000 experience points!
You gain 50 practices!
